作者简介

  吴国珍:男,1945年10月出生于福建晋江。1969年毕业于厦门大学外文系英国语言文学专业。1971年至1988年在武平一中当英语教师,1988年至2005年在晋江市养正中学当英语教师。

子曰:“温故而知新,可以为师矣。”
The Master said, “Review what you have learned to perceive andlearn what is new, and you can be a teacher.”Notes to the original:
1. 温故: to review the old knowledge; to go over what has beentaught.
2. 知新: to know about the new knowledge, to apperceive what isnew.
3. 为师: to become a teacher.
Modern Chinese version:
孔子说:“复习所学的知识,从中获得新的领悟,努力吸收新知,就有资格当老师了。”
Main idea:
In this verse Confucius encourages his disciples to review the oldknowledge so as to explore and perceive the new.
Historical facts and comments:
Confucius believed that the best learning method should be likethis: First, one should study well and review from time to timewhat one has learnt, and then try to discover and perceivesomething new from the old knowledge and set out to master the new.That was also a method Confucius had been applying to his ownteaching throughout his teaching career, and it still makes sensetoday.

子曰:“君子不器。”
The Master said, “A superior man is not a utensil.”Notes to the original:
1. 君子: (1) a superior man, a man of aristocrat origin who held ahigh-ranking official post. (2) a gentleman. (3) a man of perfectvirtue. In this verse the first interpretation is moresuitable.
2. 器: a utensil, a ware.
3. 不器: not like a utensil, not just of one single specificuse.
Modern Chinese version:
孔子说:“君子不像器具那样,(只有某一方面的用途)。”
Main idea:
In this verse Confucius warns that a man in a high official postshould not confine himself to trivial affairs.
Historical facts and comments:
In Confucius’ time, a superior man usually referred to a manholding an important government post. He should be learned andtalented but did not have to possess some certain petty skills indaily work. Instead, he was expected to be good at stateadministration.
