　　I must freely confess， that the many Virtues of those excellent Quadrupeds placed in opposite View to human Corruptions， had so far opened mine Eyes， and enlarged my Understanding， that I began to view the Actions and Passions of Man in a very different Light; and to thind the Honour of my own Kind not worth managing; which， besides，it was impossible for me to do before a Person fo so acute a Judgment as my Master， who daily convinced me of a thousand Faults in myself， whereof I had not the least Perception before， and which with us would never be numbered even among human infirmities...

　　斯威夫特1667年生于爱尔兰都柏林。1686年在都柏林三一学院取得学士学位，1692年获牛津大学硕士学位，1701年获三一学院神学博士学位。他的主要作品有：《一只澡盆的故事》、《书战》、《圣灵的机械作用》、《鲍席斯和菲尔蒙》、《关于纠正、改进和确定英国语言的建议》、《爱尔兰状况浅见》、《一个小小的建议》等。斯威夫特晚景凄凉，1745年去世，葬于圣帕特里克大教堂。
