钱锺书为《吉尔-布拉斯》作注

1956年初版《吉尔·布拉斯》封面。

《杨绛全集》第三册第二七〇页云：“《吉尔·布拉斯》是一九五六年一月出版的，一九六二年我又重新校订修改一次。译本里有好多有关哲学和文艺理论的注是锺书帮我做的。”我老早就看出“躲在屋檐承霤底下等着下金雨”的注极具钱锺书风格，现在看来，注几乎全为钱先生一手操办。钱先生借明于Bardon注和Sm ollett译本的Fitzm aurice-K elly注，还特意大读“T heLoebClassi-cal Library”。兹据初版，将有书为证者录出。

第三页。霍拉斯所谓趣味里掺和着教益。此句见《论诗》（Ars Poetica）第三四三行（《罗勃（Loeb）古典丛书》本霍拉斯《代简与讽刺诗集》第四七八至四七九页）。按H orace：Satires，Epistlesand ArsPoetica笔记：Autprodessevoluntautdelectare poetae.

第六页。教皇的坐骑是骡子，因此“教皇的骡子”是不同寻常的。按《容安馆日札》第六百九十九则论Giam battista Basile，IlPentam erone，p.408：“……com em ula dim edico”；cf.on the otherhand“la m ula du pape”（Lesage，G il Blas，I，ch. 2，see M auriceBardon‘s note in“C lassiquesGarnier”ed，I，p.355）。

第七五页。桑格拉都的话是凭空捏造的。赛尔斯（Celse）的《医药论》（D e M edicina）里虽然说消化不良等症应当喝水（第一卷第三节，《罗勃古典丛书》本第一册第七四至七七页），可是他并没有说水是万应良药；他不但没有说酒喝不得，而且认为酒是营养品（alim enta）之一（第二卷第一八节又附录，《罗勃古典丛书》本第一册第一九八至一九九页，又第四九七至四九八页）。同时，他倒跟桑格拉都一样，颇主张放血，甚至认为要治吐血症最好还是放血（第四卷第一一节，《罗勃古典丛书》本第一册第三九四至三九五页）；而桑格拉都偏偏在这一点却没引他作为权威。按日札第四百六十一则论H istoirecom iquedeFrancion：“Parm oquerie on appellelesm auvaismédecins des médecins d‘eaudouce，parce qu’ils nescaventfaire autre chose que de nousordonnerd‘en boire”（p.35）。Cf.the prescription ofD r Sangrado：“Buvez de l’eau abondam m ent”etc.（GilBlas，II，iii，éd.GarnierFrères，p.81）。又第六百三十五则论Celsus，De M edicina：IV，11，6谓呕血不止，药物无效，则当放血（Sanguis m ittendus est；et sinihilom inusex ore processit，iterumtertioque，et quotidie paulumaliquid—“The Loeb ClassicalLi-brary”，I，p.394）。

第七七页。自从古希腊哲学家亚里斯多德以后，欧洲流传着三个关于人的定义：“人是政治的动物”，“人是理性的动物”，“人是能笑的动物”。亚里斯多德《动物器官论》（D e P artib u sanim nalium ）（《罗勃古典丛书》本第二八〇至二八一页）谈到呵痒，就说：“人是唯一会笑的动物”；所以拉伯雷《巨人传》卷首致读者诗（Auxlecteurs）结句道：“因为笑是人类的特征（Le propre）。”按日札第四百六十则论H istoirecom ique de Francion：Avertissem ent：“Puisque le risn‘estpropre qu’àl‘hom m e entre tousles anim aux”（xi-xii）。This is theAristotelian anim alridens.Aproposoftickling，Aristotle writes：“Forhum an beings……are the onlycreaturesthatlaugh”（De PartibusAnim alium，tr.by A.L.Peck，“The Loeb ClassicalLibrary”，pp.280-1）。 C f. 第一三一页。希腊喜剧家米南德（M enander）说：“女人是个少不得的坏东西，”又说：“结婚是桩坏事，但是桩免不得的坏事。”（《罗勃古典丛书》本《米南德集》第四八〇至四八一，又第五一四至五一五页），这话就成为欧洲各国流行的成语。按M enander笔记：481：Fora wom anisnecessarily an evil.514：M arriage，if one w illface the truth，is anevil，buta necessary evil.

第四〇四页。我居然有这一天，躲在屋檐承霤底下等着下金雨了。这句话的意思，也许也可以把德国诗人海涅（H eine）《哈尔茨山游记》（D ie H arzreise）里面的话衬托出来。海涅慨叹自己命运不好，说：“我相信，即使天上一阵雨，下的都是银元（Thaler），也只会把我脑袋砸个窟窿。”（瓦尔蔡尔O .W alzel编《海涅全集》第四册第二〇页）。头上有承霤（Gouttière）挡住，就不怕金雨砸破脑袋了。按日札第二百四十五则论Letters of Jam esR ussellLowell：“PerhapsI shouldbearricheswith resignation.Ithinkfewofuswould hold an um brella（atany rate rightside up）againstagolden shower.”（vol.I，p.152）按LeSage，G ilBlas，Liv. 第四七七页。赫西奥德（H esiod）（约公元前八世纪），古希腊诗人，他《工作与时日》那首诗第三六三至三六五行说：“家里藏着的东西不会有害处；宁可把东西藏在家里，在外面就难保损失。”（《罗勃古典丛书本第三一页），跟这里西比翁所引，稍有出入。按H esiod，T heH om eric H ym ns，and H om erica笔记：W hata m an hasby himathom e doesnottrouble him：itis better tohave your stuff athom e，for w hatever is abroadm ay m ean loss.

第四八一页。要在门额上用金字写下这两行拉丁诗：我已经进港；永别了，希望和命运！你们作弄够我，现在可去作弄别人！这首诗是翻译一个希腊无名氏的作品，原诗是《希腊警句选》（Anthologia Graeca）第九卷第四九首（《罗勃古典丛书》本第三册第二七页）。按日札第六百七十则论朱希真《樵歌》：TheGreek Anthology，B.IX，49：“H ope and Fortune，a longfarewell.I have found the haven.I have no m ore to do with you.M ake gam e ofthose who com eafter m e.”（tr.W .R .Paton，“The Loeb ClassicalLibrary”，vol.III，p.27）

第五五八页。如有批评家怪作者剽窃古人，他气盛脸厚，引句拉丁诗道：作贼也堪豪。这是节引法国诗人桑德尔（JeanBaptisteSanteul）（一六三〇至一六九七）一首拉丁诗里的句子，原句是“诗中作贼也堪豪”。按日札第四百八十五则论G il Blas，Liv.X，ch.12：“Si les critiquess‘avisoientdereprocheràl’auteur[Ignacio diIpigna] qu‘ilpilloitles anciens，illeur répondoitavec une orgueilleuse effronterie：Furtoioetam ur inipso.”（éd.GarnierFrères，p.600）。AccordingtoFitzm aurice-Kelly，this is atruncated quotationfrom JeanBaptiste Santeul，O pera om nia，Paris，1729，II，p.120：“Q uininscribendis sem per m agia aptatrium phis，/R om a lubens offertpatriiserm onis honores./Arripite；（hoc furto vateslaetam urin ipso）/Ausonidum spoliisFrancosornatetrium phos”（GilBlas，tr.Sm ollett，“The W orld’sClassics”，II，p.303）。已先见于De Arte Poetica笔记。

卷头的《〈吉尔·布拉斯〉和勒萨日》当然曾经钱先生手。傅雷一九五四年四月二十六日与宋淇书（《傅雷文集·书信卷》第一六三页）：“杨绛译的《吉尔·布拉斯》（G ilB1as———一部分载《译文》），你能与原作对了几页，觉得语气轻重与拆句方法仍多可商榷处。足见水平以上的好译文，在对原作的interpretation方面始终存在见仁见智的问题。译者的个性、风格，作用太大了。闻杨译经锺书参加意见极多，惟锺书‘语语求其破俗’，亦未免矫枉过正。”则译文亦有中书君的手笔在里面。如第五三三页之“打得我眼里金星乱逬”，已见日札第五百三十一则论O rlando Furioso，C antoX LI 82：“Adessoe aBrandim arte e all‘altro spera/Farparer notte，e che non siaancorsera”（p.443）。 C f. 96：“D e lapercossa O rlando stupefatto，/Vide，m irando in terra，alcuna stella”（p.444）。 G ilBlas，X，10：“Ilm’appliqua surle visage une dem i-douzaine de souffletssirudem ent，qu‘ilm e fitvoir plusde lum ièresqu’iln‘y en avoitdansTem ple deSalom on”（éd.Garnier，p.571）。Cf.Partridge，Dictionary ofSlang，p.742“see stars”；W.
